Francesco Bastagli

Francesco Bastagli returned last year from Odessa where he served as Head of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) at the European Union.

In his previous United Nations career, Mr. Bastagli was UN assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping, acting as special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and as deputy special representative for civil administration with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

Before his appointment to UNMIK in 2002, Bastagli was United Nations resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative in Iran for three years. Since joining the UN in 1974, he had gained a diverse experience in other key areas of multilateral engagement. They range from refugee assistance to nuclear energy cooperation, from drugs and crime control to socio-economic development. Such issues were addressed both at the policy level and on the ground in places high on the global agenda from Central America to the Middle East.

A senior advisor to the Institute for International Political Studies, Mr. Bastagli holds a degree in Law from the State University of Milan. He also studied at the University of Georgia, USA. He is married and has two children.
